Sarah and Stephen travelled from Chicago to host their romantic rustic wedding in the Sonoma Wine country at the magical Cornerstone Gardens. Their beautiful outdoor ceremony overlooked the vineyard and was followed by a tented reception with fun, food and good wine..We hope you love their elegant, rustic wedding as much as we do!

Tell us a little bit about your proposal story…

Steve and I met on an airplane! It was open seating on Southwest Airline and I was late and last to board the plane. The only open seat was right next to Steve. We were in New York flying back home to Chicago. We talked almost the whole flight and learned that we had both been in NY that weekend for the same concert, we both went to Indiana University and we lived about a mile from each other in Chicago. We had so much common and went on a date the next week and never stopped dating from there. Five years later he proposed on a Friday night in our home. He surprised me when I got home from work. It was a very special night just the two of us (I think we opened a bottle of wine we had shipped from Napa!) and he had planned an engagement party for the next night with our friends.

What was the inspiration behind your wedding day?

Steve and I fell in love with Napa and Sonoma a few years ago when we visited his aunt and uncle there for vacation. When we got engaged, we thought there couldn’t be a more beautiful place to get married than in one of the vineyards. I kept our colors neutral (shades of blush and dusty pink for the bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen in classic black tux, white table cloths and menus) and let the natural beauty of Cornerstone come to life.

Tell us about your wedding day look…

My dress was from Sarah Seven. It had a high neck, was tight through the hips and the back and train were all lace. The back of the dress is really what sold me – I had never seen anything like it. I wore my hair mostly down with baby’s breath and no veil. I was going for an minimalist California look.

What were the florals like in your wedding?

We had beautiful loose bouquets with pinks, purples a pop of orange and lots of greenery. There were big and small flowers and overflowing. We repurposed some of the bouquets during the reception.

How did you decorate the space for your ceremony and your reception?

We love modern rustic and made that the theme of the wedding from the leather couches and bars to the exposed wood on the tables. Lots of candles and greenery, pale pink flowers with dark purple and a pop of orange. We had string lights in the barn and a beautiful chandelier. It looked very much like Restoration Hardware.

What were some of the favourite parts of your wedding?

Definitely the food! We had three different food stations with wine pairings at each for dinner. During the cocktail hour we had an oyster bar with a shucker.

What was the most anticipated or special moment from your day?

Steve and I took a dance lesson and created a dance for our first song, “You are the best thing” by Ray LaMontagne. We kept it a surprise from everyone. It was awesome!

Do you have any advice for other couples planning their own wedding?

Enjoy every minute!!

Many congratulations go to Sarah and Stephen. Their rustic wedding was just perfect in every way…

Much Love
